“A Shell of an Idea”

“A Shell of an Idea” March 24, 2017
Almost all of my art ideas start with sketches. I had seen a bronze sculpture in France  that was the center part of a beach tumbled sea shell.  I am  a sculptor, so I stole the idea and proceeded with my sketches using a box of beach treasures from the storeroom as my models. Picasso said “poor artist copy other artists but great artist, steal” and he stole ideas from everyone. So I borrowed an idea from another artist, but  this was as far as I took the idea.

“Rock Shelter Art”

I joined an expedition sponsored by U.T. Austin to Southern Venezuela. My job was to draw and paint in watercolor what I observed in the granite shelter caves we explored. The team was composed of an archaeologist, anthropologist, zoologist, geologist, paleontologist,a doctor, photographer, and a few other “ologist” and 1 artist. I spent the day in this shelter cave at the top of a granite mountain producing watercolors and sketches. The  natives who’s village was down the mountain next to the river had prepared their dead by wrapping the bodies in long strips of tree bark and then tying the bundle up like a taco. I counted seven  bark burials laying among the boulders at the back of the painted gallery. A most interesting day.

Music Capital of the World

Austin, Texas, our home and the label is a great one for the Chamber of Commerce. This sketch was started in 2013 finished in 1/1/2017. I am often asked by well meaning persons how much time it takes to do a sketch. My answer; is a lifetime of disciplined work; worked as a commercial artist, an advertising manager, two college art degrees and 8 years of university teaching, then 40 years as a professional artist. After that, it takes about an hour.

A Long Flight

“A Long Flight”
I enjoy sketching on flights. It take me away from the space, I am lost in the drawing work and the time disappears. This was a drawing that grew and kept me focused until I heard: “Please put your seat tray in the upright and locked position.” I always put the date on the drawing, missed it on this sketch.
